I started with Hunt three years ago as a Laborer, which involves a variety of tasks and responsibilities like opening, backfilling and compacting trenches, placing fiber in aerial applications, pulling cable and wire through trenches and buildings, and removing and replacing sod on easements.
Since then, I’ve moved up within the company, holding Operator and Installer roles prior to my current position as a Construction Supervisor. I’ve gone from digging holes to supervising an entire crew! As a Construction Supervisor, I manage bore crews during the installation of pipe and fiber. But my day-to-day can involve any number of tasks and responsibilities.
When I’m onsite, I’m supervising contractors, monitoring employee productivity and providing coaching, and doing hands-on work like organizing materials or keeping the site tidy. Offsite, a lot of work goes into project management, from setting goals to organizing workflow to ensuring we stay within budget.
There’s also the human element of what we do — on any given day, I’m interacting with homeowners, suppliers, delivery couriers, venture capitalists, property owners, local authorities, you name it. That requires strong communication skills, which most people may not consider when they think about the requirements of being in this line of work. We actually have a dedicated team at Hunt that handles homeowner concerns and the occasional damages that may arise; they manage the issue, document it, arrange for any repair appointments and communicate with everyone involved. We have a real, vested interest in making sure everyone who comes into contact with Hunt has a good experience, so again, communication is really critical.
It is rewarding to work on challenging projects and see them unfold from beginning to end. It’s a great feeling when multiple crews are being productive and working as a team. I deal with lots of different people daily, so when everyone is working well together to achieve a common goal, that’s a sign that I’m succeeding in my role, too.
My career development at Hunt has been made possible through the support and mentorship of our team. Hunt has one of the best work environments I’ve experienced; it’s a family-oriented workplace and everyone is willing to help out. I learn something new every day, and I continue to rely on our team for mentorship and guidance regularly. I definitely feel that at Hunt, we grow as a team, and that’s really rewarding. My goal is to learn as much as I can on the job and from my peers to further my career even more, and to simply be better at what I do than I am now. I look forward to seeing what lies ahead!
